READING PASSAGE
Your school is celebrating Kindness Week. Your teacher has asked you to read this story to your classmates. You will now present the story to the class.
Every day after school, Marcus passed the same old man selling packets of tissue outside the MRT station.
The man's clothes were worn and faded, and hardly anyone ever stopped for him. Marcus always felt a pang of pity, but he only had enough pocket money for his own snacks, so he would hurry past with his eyes lowered.
One rainy evening, Marcus saw the old man shivering, his cardboard box of tissues slowly going soggy in the downpour. Something in Marcus's heart shifted. He walked over, bought two packets he did not even need, and pressed his own umbrella into the man's hands.
"Keep it, uncle," he said quietly. "I live just nearby."
The old man's eyes glistened as he thanked Marcus again and again.
Marcus walked home soaked to the skin, yet he felt strangely warm inside. He had given up something he needed for someone who needed it far more — and he finally understood that true generosity always costs us something.
