READING PASSAGE

Your school is holding a Safety Week. Your teacher has asked you to read this story to your classmates to remind everyone to stay safe. You will now present the story to the class.

Ethan always thought the rules at the swimming complex were a complete nuisance.

"No running," the signs warned, but Ethan loved to dash across the slippery tiles, weaving past the lifeguards who called out for him to slow down. "Nothing bad ever happens," he would scoff.

One bright afternoon, as Ethan sprinted towards the pool, his feet suddenly flew out from under him on the wet floor. He landed hard, and a sharp pain shot through his wrist.

As a lifeguard gently helped him up and pressed an ice pack to his swelling arm, Ethan finally understood. The rules had never been there to spoil his fun — they had been there to protect him all along.

For the rest of the holidays, Ethan wore a cast and could only sit and watch his friends splash about in the water. He had plenty of time to think.

From that day on, he not only followed the rules himself, but gently reminded others to do the same.
