I will never forget the sweltering afternoon I finally learned to ride a bicycle.

For weeks, I had been far too afraid to let my father remove the training wheels. Every time he offered, I imagined myself crashing and scraping my knees, so I always shook my head and firmly refused.

That Sunday, however, my father gently unscrewed the little wheels anyway. "I will hold on the whole time," he promised. My heart hammered as I climbed on, and I gripped the handlebars so tightly that my knuckles turned white.

We wobbled forward together, his steady hand on the back of my seat. Then, without my noticing, he quietly let go. When I finally turned to look, he was a tiny figure far behind me — and I was riding, all on my own!

I was so shocked that I forgot to brake and tumbled straight into a bush. Yet I did not cry. Instead, I burst out laughing, because I had finally done it.

That day taught me that our biggest fears often shrink the very moment we are brave enough to face them.
