READING PASSAGE

Your school is holding its annual Sports Day. Your teacher has asked you to read this story during assembly to remind your schoolmates about the value of teamwork. You will now present the story to the school.

Class 6B had never won the class relay. This year, their fastest runner, Devi, was determined to change that.

"Just pass me the baton first," she told the others. "I'll do the rest."

But on training day, Devi grabbed the baton and sprinted off so quickly that Marcus, the next runner, fumbled the handover and it clattered to the ground.

"You're too slow!" Devi snapped.

Their teacher, Miss Chan, blew her whistle. "A relay isn't won by the fastest runner," she said. "It's won by the smoothest team."

The next week, they practised only one thing — the handover. Again and again, until passing the baton felt as natural as breathing.

On Sports Day, Class 6B were not the fastest off the blocks. But their handovers were flawless, and one by one they slipped past the other teams.

When Devi crossed the finishing line first, she did not raise her own arms. Instead, she turned and ran straight back to hug all three of her teammates.
